A journey shaped by people and the sea

In the still waters of Savusavu Bay, a vision began to take shape, a partnership between people and the ocean guided by trust, curiosity, and care. J. Hunter Pearls was founded on the belief that the sea gives most generously when treated with respect. For more than two decades, that belief has shaped every decision, every farm, and every relationship with the iTaukei communities who hold custodianship of their qoliqoli (customary iTaukei fishing rights). Together, the villages and the sea have built a legacy of shared responsibility, where livelihoods and the ocean’s wellbeing are one and the same.

Grassroots discovery and innovation

During the quiet pause of the pandemic, when the world seemed to hold its breath, curiosity became creation. In those months of isolation, Justin Hunter turned again to the water, experimenting with the native Fiji pearl oyster. What began as a small test became a revelation that this native shell, long admired for its lustrous pearls, could also nourish people and provide a future rooted in sustainability. From those first lines hung in Savusavu’s gentle tides, a new chapter for Fiji’s pearl pioneers began, one that unites ingenuity with the creation of a sustainable edible by-product.

A story of people and place

Behind every Fiji pearl oyster farm is a village community that gives the project its strength. Women weave the nets, clean the lines, and manage the rhythm of the farms. Youth learn the craft from their elders, guided by the understanding that to look after the ocean is to look after home. Each person’s work is a gesture of care, a thread in a larger tapestry that connects their villages to the land, the sea, and each other. It truly takes a village to raise an oyster, and for the Fiji Pearl Oyster Project it is an act of renewal where culture and livelihood come together for the good of the ocean.
