We didn’t set out to create a new kind of oyster. We set out to protect a place
For over 25 years, I’ve worked alongside coastal villages in Savusavu, building a model for how pearl farming aquaculture can strengthen communities, preserve ecosystems, and offer a truly rare natural product that gives more than it takes.
The Fiji Pearl Oyster is the next step in that journey.
And well, Mother Nature rewarded us because it’s a seriously good oyster
It’s a first-of-its-kind delicacy rooted in a deep commitment to our ocean, to our people, and to the future. With the support of local communities, especially women and youth, and with our like-minded partners, we’re cultivating a native species using low-impact, nature-led practices that clean the water, support biodiversity, and create meaningful, place-based livelihoods in coastal villages.
The Fiji Pearl Oyster commitment operates intentionally. Each oyster is packed with care, adhering to strict biosecurity regulations and quality assurance measures to ensure every oyster is safe, traceable, and sustainably handled from harvest to delivery.
Through the AQUAPearl project, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Global Affairs Canada, we’re proud to contribute to a national quality assurance program that will set new benchmarks for shellfish safety and handling in Fiji. This work will also provide a model for other sustainable bivalve aquaculture initiatives across the Pacific.
The Fiji Pearl Oyster would not be possible without the communities that help it thrive. Our commitment is to ensure a circular blue economy ~ one that gives back by supporting training, conservation, village development, and sustainable resource management plans that allow communities to prosper without depleting the environments they depend on. We’re not scaling fast.
We’re scaling right. The Fiji Pearl Oyster project is still growing, but our values are set, and we intend to protect our oceans every step of the way.
If you’re curious, if you’re aligned, or if you simply love oysters, we’d love to grow with you.
